I groan, and the story pours out of me. Souil’s time as mayor, the way he’s turned Adarie into a sanctuary city for luring visitors in hopes of finding another time dragon whose energy he can drain, the way he plans to cross the barrier at sunrise and mess with the timeline for the last thousand years. All of it.
When I’m done talking, I take a deep breath and wait for her response. I don’t have long to wait.
“Jeez. You’d think after this many years, he would have learned something.” Artelya makes a displeased face.
“Oh, he’s learned a lot of things,” I answer. “But none of them are good.”
“That I believe.”
“You agree with me, though, right? He can’t be allowed to cross back to our side of the barrier. If he does…”
“If he does, all hell will break loose,” she finishes for me. “Yes, I most definitely agree that can’t be allowed to happen.”
“Oh, thank God.” For the first time since I watched Souil absorb that dragon last night, I feel like there might be just a tiny bit of hope.
“Unfortunately, I cannot let Asuga kill the wizard with dragon fire.”
And just like that, my stomach pitches again. “But why?” I gasp.
“Because anything the dragon’s fire touches is cauterized from time.”
“He said that once before, but I’m not sure what that means exactly, other than the asshole dies—which I’m perfectly fine with,” I say.
Artelya shakes her head, starts walking closer to the dragon. I follow. “It means it’ll be as though he never came to Adarie. This village did not exist before Souil and I arrived. In fact, it grew around me. I think Souil built it in case I ever released the dragon, so he’d be nearby. If dragon fire consumes him…Adarie will disappear, and all of its people will be leading different lives—if they are born at all.”
My eyes widen as I think of all the friends we’ve made in Adarie, all the villagers who’ve built their homes here. Then a thought occurs to me. “But you’ll still be here. Won’t you be enough to hold the timeline, if the village was built around you, too?”
I hold my breath, my chest tight at the thought of so many lives destroyed. We cannot risk their timeline just to save mine.
“I don’t think you realize what will happen if I unfreeze Asuga,” Artelya says, and I can tell whatever she’s about to say—I’m definitely not going to like it.
“That bad?” I ask.
She gives me a bracing slap on the back. It’s not quite the kind of comfort I was expecting, but I’ll take it—especially coming from her. Because she strikes me as the kind of woman who doesn’t give false comfort.
