“I’ve been wondering what was taking you so long,” she says, and already she sounds a million times more confident than I feel.
“Hello…?” I ask tentatively, to make sure I’m not manifesting what I want to hear.
“Artelya,” she fills in.
“Umm…nice to meet you, Artelya.” She sounds so tough that it’s freaking me out more than I already was. Clearing my throat, I continue. “I’m sorry, I just can’t believe I’m actually talking to another gargoyle.”
“I’ve got horns and I’m made of stone, so I guess I’m making dreams come true today.”
“Oh, right. I guess—”
“Relax.” She laughs. “I’m just fucking with you, Grace.”
“You know my name?”
“Of course,” she says. “I heard you as soon as you arrived in Adarie. I haven’t really paid attention to those walking past me all these years, since we kind of go into stasis when we’re fortified too long—”
I interrupt. “Fortified?”
“Yes. Our solid stone form—” She breaks off, steps forward, and suddenly the mist around us seems to disappear. She’s tall and muscular, with dark curls and brown skin. She’s carrying a massive shield and sword and yeah, this woman looks like she could slay all the dragons. “Has no one given you any training yet?”
“Nope,” I tell her. “You’re the first gargoyle I’ve ever met.”
“The first gargoyle?” She sounds horrified. “What are you talking about? There are tens of thousands of us. How could you not have found any? Sure, I haven’t been in my world for a while, but I can’t imagine they would just leave you on your own. That’s not what gargoyles are about at all.”
“I don’t think they knew about me,” I rush to explain. “I’ve only found out about myself since I’ve been in Noromar.”
“That’s impossible. Gargoyles can communicate—” She shakes her head like she’s trying to clear it. “I don’t get it. How could things have changed so much in the time I’ve been here?”
I look around and realize we’re no longer in Adarie. We’re standing on rocky cliffs above a roiling, grayish-green ocean. The sky above us is a bright blue with clouds made of giant white fluff, and the grass we’re standing on is an absolutely gorgeous bright green.
I kind of want to ask her where we are, but there’s no time for that. There’s too much to do.
So instead of asking about what might be the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen, I simply answer her question. “I think, maybe, it’s because you’ve been here a really, really long time.”
“How long?” she asks urgently, her brown eyes blazing with an internal fire that burns right through me. “What’s the year?”
I tell her, and she blanches.
