My mate looks like a breeze could blow him off his feet as easily as I could blow him a kiss, and I really want to get him upstairs. At the same time, though, Nyaz doesn’t look like he can be put off.
Fine. Whatever. I’ll listen to what he says, but if it takes too long, I’m getting Hudson out of here. ASAP.
With another questioning look at Hudson—which gets me a reassuring stroke down the center of my back—I walk into Nyaz’s back room.
“Sit down, please,” he says once he closes the door behind us. He gestures to the two chairs opposite his desk before walking to a small refrigerator in the corner of the room and pulling out three waters.
He hands one to Hudson and me before finally making his way to the chair behind his desk.
“Thank you,” I tell him as I open the bottle and drink half of it down in one gulp. Fighting dragons—and evil mayors—is thirsty work.
Hudson does the same, except he finishes his bottle. Then he turns to Nyaz and asks, “What do you need from us?”
Nyaz inclines his head in an “okay, we’re cutting to the chase” kind of way. Then he says, “You weren’t as alone in town square tonight as you thought you were.”
“We certainly felt alone,” I answer, because I did. It was just Hudson, me, and the troubadours out there trying to save the whole town. Smokey died, Orebon died, and no one came to help us.
Deep down, I know the best thing the townspeople could do was hide during all that mess and destruction. But a small part of me is bitter, because why are five people and an umbra—none of whom are from this town—on our own when it comes to the safety of this place?
“I can imagine,” Nyaz tells me. “And I’m sorry about that. But rumors are spreading that the mayor has managed to absorb the power of your two time dragons and plans on using it to cross the barrier at first light.”
I stare at him. “You heard all that from behind your desk?”
“I hear all I need to hear,” he answers me.
“So what do rumors about the mayor have to do with us?” Hudson asks.
“It’s a difficult time here in Adarie—”
“Dragon attacks will do that to a place.” It comes out sounding more sarcastic than I mean it to, but I don’t apologize. I’m frustrated and exhausted, and I don’t understand why he’s talking to us about this. We lived it—we don’t need a recap.
