“And the worst,” I remind her. She read my journals, so she knows the only way I could disintegrate the time wizard would be to climb inside his mind, take his thoughts in my own—forever. Every gift has a cost, Richard used to say, and that was the cost of mine. I can kill anyone with a thought, but I then have to carry them with me for the rest of my life. It’s half the reason it was so easy to choose torture over helping Cyrus. The other half was because yeah, not a psychopath.
“Yes, also the worst,” she agrees. “So what can we use to defeat him?”
“Swords? Speed? Strength?” That’s pretty much all I can think of based on what we’ve seen in Adarie, and I can’t help but think the guy who just masterminded this whole thing is ready for all of that and a whole lot more.
“There’s got to be something,” she says. “Otherwise, what? We just give up now and let him destroy everything and everyone who has ever existed in a thousand years?”
I haven’t voiced my thoughts about that out loud, but apparently Grace got there with me and figured out that Souil is so overcome by pain at his daughter’s death that he doesn’t see what will happen. Or he doesn’t care.
Either way, not great for us.
When we pass Grace’s regular smoothie place and realize it’s still open, despite everything, I stop in and get the number three special—her favorite. It’s purple, but then they all are, so I’m not exactly sure what distinguishes it from any of the other numbers on the menu. But I’m not about to rock the boat, not with everything she’s been through tonight. And everything there still is to come.
We turn a corner—we’re almost to the inn—then stop dead at what’s in front of us. We’re back in the town square, which is still deserted, and seeing the place after being gone for a little while makes it register what a battle zone it really was. The destruction has been cleared away, but that’s about it. The burned buildings and tents are still in place, and each one we pass looks worse than the next, while flowers and lights are strewn everywhere.
Even the inn has some damage, but it’s on the side of the square opposite where the battle took place, so it doesn’t look too bad. Though I’m nearly certain Nyaz is going to need a new roof. And he’s definitely going to need some new landscaping, because the whole yard in front of the inn is a disaster of burned trees and debris-strewn flower beds.
“This is awful,” Grace whispers as we begin the familiar walk to the front door. “I feel terrible.”
