It only takes a few minutes for me to dig a small grave, where I drop in Smokey’s ribbon, next to a bed of beautiful flowers while the other three work on Orebon’s.
Fifteen minutes after we get to the park, we’ve buried them. But that doesn’t seem enough—not for Smokey or for Orebon. I’m racking my brain for some poem that I can recite here—maybe Thomas or Dickinson, Lowell or Hardy—but before I can decide on something, Caoimhe starts to sing.
Her voice is low and haunting, a melody without words that reaches inside my soul. Squeezes my heart. And somehow makes the pain a little worse and a little better at the same time.
Grace reaches over, takes hold of my hand, and brings it to her lips. Like the song, I feel her kiss deep inside.
Tears are pouring down Caoimhe’s face by the time she finishes her song, and Lumi wraps her in a hug.
“I need—” Her voice breaks.
“I know.” Grace steps in. “I think we all need a moment. Let’s meet up at the inn in a few hours. We’ll decide what we’re going to do then.”
It’s as good a plan as any of us are capable of right now. I’m drained and have been for a while, but I wasn’t about to say that when we had things to do. I must look as bad as I feel, though, because Grace wraps her arm through mine and starts steering us back toward the inn.
The more I think about it, the more I think survival—in either realm—is an iffy proposition if Souil manages to make it back across the barrier. Which means we need to figure out a way to stop him, sooner rather than later.
I want to say that’s a problem for tomorrow, when I’m feeling a little less exhausted, but the truth is there is no time. The irony of running out of time while hunting a time wizard doesn’t escape me, but it’s where we’re at.
Grace must be thinking the same way I am, because she asks, “Do you think we’ll be able to kill him?”
“Considering what he can do with just a thought?” I answer skeptically. “I’m pretty sure it’s a long shot. I mean, maybe if I had my powers here…”
“So what do we have?” she asks. “If we don’t have what’s pretty much the best weapon in existence—”
