I shake my head, try to shut out her words. But it doesn’t work. How can it when she’s so insistent about getting my attention? And once she has it, she holds it—because this is Grace, my Grace, and ignoring her is the one thing I’ve never been able to do.

Her arms tighten around me, grounding me when I want nothing more than to just float away. “I’m sorry, Hudson. I’m so sorry it hurts. But this kind of pain follows you. Trust me, I know.”

She presses her forehead to mine, keeps her hands on my cheeks, urges herself so close to me that her breath and warmth and softness become mine. “If you go away now, the pain will just be there on the other side, waiting for you. The only way to get over it is to go through it, no matter how much it hurts.

“But that doesn’t mean you’ll be going through it alone. Because I’m right here.” She brushes her lips against mine. “I’m right here, Hudson, and I’m not going anywhere. You just have to reach out. You just have to trust me to help you get to the other side.”

She makes it sound so easy, when two hundred years of life have taught me it’s anything but. My whole life I’ve felt too much, hurt too much, over things I couldn’t change. It took years to learn how to bear the emptiness and the agony alone.

But I did it.

I learned how to handle the pain and learned how to disappear when I didn’t.

It’s how I survived all those years of torture. And now Grace wants me to let those lessons go? She wants me to lean into her and trust her to get me—to get us—where we need to go?

A year ago, that would have been impossible. Two years ago, it would have been a joke—and not a particularly funny one at that. But this isn’t two years ago. I’m not the Hudson I was when they dragged me back. I’m not the same guy who would rather disappear than know his own brother wanted him dead.

That betrayal was so painful, I willed myself out of existence in an instant.

And it’s nothing compared to the pain I feel ripping through my chest right now.

But this time…this time someone wants me to stay.

Someone needs me, loves me, as much as I need and love her.

I take a deep, shuddering breath.

I’m Grace’s mate. She chose me. And she deserves more than a guy who can’t get his shit together. A guy who runs away when things start to hurt. And she sure as shit deserves someone who will place the same trust in her that she places in him.
