After he disappears, none of us move. We just stand there, staring at one another as everything Souil said runs through my head.
That he’s been here a thousand years.
That I somehow tore a hole in time and space. A big one.
That the big dragon attacking was the last puzzle piece Souil needed. And I gave it to him. Brought it right to his doorstep.
The thought has my stomach churning, has panic welling up inside me. My heart goes crazy, and I can’t remember how to breathe.
We’ve been fighting time dragons, hell-bent on “cauterizing” us from this time and place. No wonder they seemed so different than the dragons I met at Katmere. They’re not the same thing at all. I already knew they weren’t shifters—but this? A dragon species created by the God of Time for the specific purpose of seeking and destroying anyone who messes with his creation?
Except the mayor, who somehow has managed to survive for hundreds of years in Adarie despite these dragons? And if that’s true, why the hell does he look like an extra from Saturday Night Fever? And how the hell has he lived this long? Time wizards aren’t immortal, are they? I would imagine they have life spans like witches, like other humans, so how the hell has he cheated death all this time?
It doesn’t make sense. None of this makes sense.
Except…I think back on things I’ve heard in my time here. About people like us who have shown up through the years.
Did the time dragons eat them all? Or did Souil kill their time dragons so that he could continue to live?
A loud wail comes from behind me, interrupting my thoughts, and I turn to find a bruised and battered Lumi on the ground beside Orebon’s body. He gathers his spouse up in his arms and rocks him as the most awful sobs I’ve ever heard tear from his chest.
Caoimhe is still there as well, holding Orebon’s hand while silent tears roll down her face. “He didn’t have to do this,” she whispers when our gazes meet. “He didn’t have to kill him.”
I nod, because she’s right. There was no reason for Orebon to die except that Souil wanted to make a point. And no way for us to stop him because we never even saw it coming.
“I’m sorry,” I tell her and Lumi. “I’m so sorry.”
But Lumi is inconsolable, his cries filling up the night sky as he rocks the body of his best friend and lover, his husband, the father of their child.
I turn to Hudson, who has walked over to Smokey’s remains. Like the troubadours, he, too, sinks to his knees. He, too, gathers her in his arms and holds her to his chest.
