He snorts, shakes his head. “I got here the same way you did. I tried to go back in time, tried to save my daughter from dying of such a terrible illness. No father—” For the first time, his voice breaks.
He clears his throat, looks away for several seconds, and I think back on the time we visited his house, to the paintings on his wall. Of him, yes, but also of a little girl who looked like him. The cause of all this mess, even though I doubt she ever had a clue.
Souil takes a deep breath, and this time when he turns back to me, there’s a bright sheen over his eyes. One that has nothing to do with madness and everything to do with sorrow. “No father would let his only child suffer like that if there was something he could do to take the pain away.”
My first thought is that that’s not true. Cyrus wouldn’t walk across the street to save me from hurting, let alone take on the God of Time and spend centuries exiled in a place he hates. But Souil has. Does that mean that, in some strange way, he’s right for what he’s done? Who the fuck are we to make that call? And who the fuck are we to stand in the way of his only chance to save his child?
I glance at Grace to see what she thinks, but all I see is her frozen expression illuminated by the fires still burning all around us. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that she’s thinking about her parents—I can see it in her eyes, in the tight press of her lips, in her fists clenched by her sides. I know she’s wondering if she would have done the same thing to save her mom and dad if she’d had the power to do so.
How can I understand her need, her pain, but not have the same understanding for his?
But before I can say anything—to Grace or to Souil—she steps forward. And though her fists are still clenched by her sides, her eyes are resolute. “It doesn’t work that way, Souil. You can’t just change the world to suit yourself. I should know.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. That’s where you’re all wrong.” He makes a sweeping gesture to encompass all of us. “When you have this much power, the world works the way you want it to work.”
As if to underscore his statement, the clock tower pops back up—right where it belongs.
