“Now that you’ve killed the last dragon, that can’t happen,” he continues with a negligent little shrug. “Which technically means you should be thanking me instead of standing there looking like I just kicked your shadow. My plan did save your lives.”
Despite myself, I wince when he says it, which only makes him laugh. “Too soon?” he mocks. “She was a brave little thing. Foolish but brave.”
“You have no idea what she was!” I growl.
The next thing I know, Souil is gone again. I whirl around, looking for where he’ll land. I’m determined not to end up like Orebon, not now, when Grace and I still have to find a solution for this.
But he doesn’t appear next to me at all. He shows up next to Grace and, in an instant, sweeps her legs out from under her.
She hits the ground with a startled screech, but I’m immediately fading to her, ready to take this fucker out.
But he’s already gone again.
Frustration wells up inside me. No matter how fast I fade, no matter how prepared I think I am, I can’t fight someone who can move through time like this. He is always one step ahead or behind where I think he is, and there’s no way I can anticipate which it’s going to be.
I reach down and help Grace up as Souil flashes back into existence twenty feet away from us.
“There’s more where that came from, Hudson,” he taunts. “Keep acting up, and I’ll take back your choice to walk away and just kill you now.”
I start to tell him to do it. To just do it. I’d rather get it over with than stand here and let him play with me like this for much longer. I’ve lived that way once, spent my whole life getting old enough and strong enough that I didn’t have to live like that anymore. No way am I going back to it. Not for him. Not for anyone.
But then I look over at Grace, and I realize that’s not true. I can’t let him kill me, because if he takes me out, he’ll take Grace out, too. And I can’t let that happen. She’s my mate, the love of my life, the most beautiful on the inside—and the outside—girl I could find in any realm. I won’t let this bastard take her from this world.
I can’t.
And so I swallow back my pride, swallow back the words that are burning me alive. And let him think he has me cowed as Grace asks, “So we accidentally made a time rift. But you’re a time wizard. You know how this stuff works. What did you do to get here?”
