Sometimes, I stalled out on two and never got the chance to get to three because it wasn’t possible. Or because he was too far gone to oppose.

Standing here, looking into Souil’s eyes brimming with an unholy power that seems an awful lot like madness reminds me of those times. More, it chills my blood because I’m suddenly afraid that whatever his big plan is, I won’t be able to stop him. Grace, and Adarie, will suffer because I didn’t recognize the evil sooner. And Orebon and Smokey—poor, sweet Smokey—have already paid the ultimate price.

I should have recognized it. I fucking should have. I’ve stared it down my whole bloody life. How could I have not seen it now, when I needed to the most?

I didn’t like him from the beginning, knew something was off with him. And still I fell into his trap—and took everyone I care about with me. How fucking stupid can one person be?

“What happens if we do that?” Grace asks, and I glance at her. She doesn’t look back at me, though. Instead, she keeps her eyes on his, never looking away.

And that’s when I know that she gets it, too. Souil is a snake, and the second we take our eyes off him, it’s over. He’ll strike, and we’ll be collateral damage in whatever parts of this evil plot he hasn’t shared with us yet.

Then again, maybe we already are, and we just don’t know it yet.

“If you do it?” He laughs. “There is no if. You will do it—the only question is if you do it voluntarily or if I make you do it.”

“It’s one thing to jump around through time or to freeze us when we aren’t expecting it,” I tell him scornfully. “But do you really think you can make us do something we don’t want to do?”

“Do you know how much power is coursing through my veins right this moment?” he demands. “Do you have any idea what happens when you kill a time dragon?”

Before either Grace or I can say anything, he whirls around, throws an arm out, and the clock tower disappears. It just…disappears.

It doesn’t disintegrate. It doesn’t blow up. It just ceases to exist.

“The God of Time, that old bastard, created them to destroy people who were arrogant enough to try to mess with how he’s woven time and space together. Anyone who creates a tear in either, anyone who actually succeeds, would end up with one of these dragons on their ass. The creatures’ job is to fix rifts, and they don’t stop until they cauterize the tear and erase the offender from the entire timeline with dragon fire.
