Yes, I know she had to die. I know she was determined to kill us all—and, at the end, I think, to kill Hudson and me specifically. But knowing that is one thing.
Knowing that we might have been duped—that we might have been used—is another thing altogether.
Already, the mayor looks younger, taller, stronger. He definitely seems more powerful, his body alight from within by the powerful magic he’s just absorbed. When he moves, when he lifts his arms in front of him, he fairly crackles with electricity and, by the time he breathes in the last of the dragon’s essence, he is glowing.
“What the fuck did you do?” Hudson yells, heading toward him at a run.
But before Hudson gets there, Souil is gone.
“What the hell?” Hudson turns around, wild-eyed. “Where’d he go?”
I shake my head because I have no idea.
Long seconds pass as we spin in circles trying to figure out where he disappeared to, all to no avail.
And then, suddenly, he’s back. A hundred feet from where he’d been just a moment before.
“How did he do that?” I ask, but Hudson doesn’t take the time to answer. Instead, he fades toward the wizard again.
He’s there in less than a second, but Souil is already gone.
Except this time it isn’t for as long. A beat later, he pops up directly behind Hudson and shoves him, hard.
The push has Hudson flying forward and landing on his face. Hudson, who never stumbles under the weight of someone else’s power.
He’s back up in a split second, whirling toward Souil, who is standing in the middle of town square now, legs apart and head thrown back in laughter.
“You don’t actually think you’re going to be able to touch me, do you?” he queries as Hudson fades toward him.
And yet again, he disappears—only to reappear several feet away with a giant stick in his hand. But it’s not just any stick. It’s got two chains coming from the top of it, and attached to those chains are spiky silver balls the likes of which I have never seen before.
Oh, and he’s added a cape to his ensemble—a bright white and silver sequined one, to be exact, nearly the same color as what I think might possibly be a medieval battle mace in his hand—updated, of course, with a little seventies flare.
“What the fuck is that?” Hudson shoots me a look, completely bewildered.
“I think it’s—” I breaks off as Souil lifts the stick above his head and starts to spin it while his hips gyrate, Elvis style. The chains—and the balls attached to them—start to spin, too, and I gasp as the entire town square is suddenly turned into a seventies, LSD-inspired disco party.
