I promise myself when we get back to the inn—or what’s left of the inn after this dragon lost her shit all over the town square—I’ll hold him for as long as he’ll let me.
But right now, we have a new problem. Because just like the dragon we killed last time, droplets of gold and silver are rising out of this dragon, too. They’re spinning, spinning, spinning in that same double-helix pattern I saw before. Only instead of rising into the night as I thought the other ones did, this energy stays right here between us and the dragon.
As first, I don’t know what’s wrong, and it creeps me out. Is this her soul circling around us? Her energy? Is this a way for her broken body to try to reassemble itself?
I hope it’s not that. I really do. Because death should be respectful—even the death of our enemies—and the last thing I want is to have to fight some oddly reanimated zombie dragon after everything else that’s happened tonight.
But it turns out what’s actually happening is so much worse.
Because when I look behind me, Souil is here. He’s the one pulling forth this fine gold-and-silver mist from within the dragon. And under my horrified, watchful eye, he’s the one who opens his mouth and starts to pull the dragon’s essence deep inside himself.
“What are you doing?” I gasp, trying to get between him and the dragon’s soul. “You can’t do that. You can’t—”
He shoves me out of the way so hard that I stumble into the slick blood and nearly fall. But Hudson’s there to catch me even as he whirls around to see what the mayor is doing.
“You sick fuck,” he growls, setting me aside as he moves toward the mayor, who has almost absorbed all of the dragon’s essence by this time.
No, not just the mayor, I remember sickly.
Souil had claimed he was a time wizard, too, but we’d laughed it off. My stomach bottoms out as I realize we may have made a terrible mistake.
For the first time in months, I remember the figure on the balcony of City Hall as the smaller dragon’s essence made its way up and into the night.
I remember how almost unrecognizable Souil was when we met up with him for brunch the next day. How much younger and smoother his face had looked.
More, I remember him pushing us to kill this very dragon, telling us that it was the only way to save the village.
And here he is now, at the scene of this death, taking the last thing this dragon has to give.
