When I change back, my wing is repaired. The pain is still there, but the tip of the wing is healed. I can fly again.

And so I do, rocketing straight into the air as the dragon bears down on Hudson and on poor Smokey’s remains.

I get to the same level as the dragon one second before she lets loose another stream of flames straight at Hudson and, this time, when my fist turns to stone, it’s on purpose. We connect with a powerful slam, and I hit her with an undercut beneath her jaw as hard as I can.

The power behind the stone sends the dragon reeling through the air, her fire spewing across the night sky as she tumbles backward. I fly after her, determined to bring her down this time. Determined that she’s wreaked enough havoc tonight, killed and injured enough people. I’m done with her. Done with this. Even if I have to die to stop her, this ends now.

And so I chase her across the night sky.

Eventually the dragon rebounds from my punch and comes back at me, fire blazing from her nose and mouth and rage pouring from her eyes.

But that makes two of us. I may not have the flames, but I sure as hell have the fury, and I drop down so that I can fly beneath her this time. As I do, I change both my hands to stone. Then I lower myself to where she can’t see me beneath her and come right back up, gathering speed as I go.

This isn’t like before. I don’t have the power or momentum behind me to plow right through her chest. But I do have enough power to aim for something else.

As the dragon spreads her wings wide and searches the area far below us for more prey, I take my stone fists and plow right through her thin, leathery wing—and then yank down with as much strength as I can find.

She screams again as a jagged rip appears where she once had a functioning wing. She goes into free fall, turning upside down and spinning, spinning, spinning completely out of control, and I kick away from her, my wings pulling me out of the path of her death spiral.

But still she doesn’t go down without a fight. She hits the ground hard, flames spewing in all directions as she climbs shakily to her feet. But Hudson is there, too, fading up and around and under her flames as he races straight for her.

I don’t know what he plans to do, don’t know even if he has a plan at this point, but there’s no way I’m letting my mate go after this dragon alone. Not when she’s angry and hurt and cornered and has nothing left to lose.
