I glance down as the dragon approaches the tents. It’s now or never, so I do what needs to be done and use the dagger to slice a large gash in the dragon’s talons.

“Hold on!” I shout and am grateful when Lumi grabs me around the waist so I have both hands free again.

The dragon screams in pain at the exact same instant we start to fall. But instead of freaking out and flying away, as I expected, she gets pissed as hell and lets loose a string of fire that burns straight through every single tent in the square. Including the one I was hoping to land on. Of course.

“New plan,” I shout to Lumi as we fall.

“There’s a plan?” he shouts back to be heard over the rushing wind.

“Not really,” I admit. With Lumi holding on, I spin around the best I can in midair. My goal is to land first and have him use me as a cushion. It’s not a great plan, and I know I’m going to end up with a shit ton of broken bones, but I can’t just leave him to die.

Not the fall but the bounce, I remind myself even though I still think it’s bullshit. And prepare to—

All of a sudden, Grace flies right into us at what feels like one hundred miles an hour. She sends us spinning through the air, but she catches up immediately and wraps her arms around me.

“Need a ride?” she asks.

“Bless you, Grace,” Lumi says, and he looks completely green.

I have one second to fear that he’s going to puke on me, but somehow he manages to hold it together until we get to the ground. As soon as his feet hit grass, he stumbles away and pukes behind the nearest bench.

Not that I blame him—that was one hell of a close call.

To be honest, it’s still a close call, considering the dragon has gone into a rage like nothing I’ve ever seen before. She’s burning everything in her path, and suddenly I’m afraid there won’t be any village come morning if we don’t do something fast.

The only good thing—and good is a relative term here—that comes out of this latest rampage is that when she spins in midair, she catches sight of Grace and me. And once she’s found us, she locks on like a heat-seeking missile and comes right at us.

“Fly!” I yell to Grace because this is the best chance we’ve got to get her out of town and away from all the people who live here.
