As if I thought it into fruition, the dragon picks this exact moment to wag her tail, or whatever the hell dragons do with the things. I begin to slide off, just like I feared, and barely manage to grab one of the scales to hold on to.
They’re even sharper on bare skin than they are through jeans, however, and it slices through the skin of my palm. As blood flows all down my hand and fingers, it becomes a hundred times harder to hold on—and that’s not even counting the pain of the whole thing.
Still, there’s too much at stake here to let go. So I just grit my teeth, hold on tight, and wait for the perfect opening.
It finally comes as the dragon circles the clock tower. To avoid running into the sharp spires, she pulls her talons up close to her body, with Lumi still in them.
It’s the closest he’s been to me this entire time, but I’m smart enough to know that I’ve only got a few seconds to capitalize on his proximity. As soon as we round this expanse of taller buildings, the dragon will untuck her legs and the opportunity will be lost.
With that in my head, I don’t give myself any more time to think about what might go wrong. Instead, I just move. I release the scale with my hand and push off the dragon’s tail with my leg as hard as I can and end up flying the eight or so feet straight into her clenched talons. And Lumi.
I bounce off as soon as I hit the talons and scramble to hold on to something, anything. That something is Lumi, my good hand tangling in his shirt as I hold on for dear life.
Lumi screams as I crash into him and start to slide down, but then he’s scrambling, too. Reaching out and grabbing whatever part of me he can take hold of.
He grabs the wrist on my bad hand, holding on with a strength that surprises me considering how lanky he is. And then we’re flying through the air with me dangling from her talons like I’m paragliding with a fucking dragon on my back.
“What do we do?” Lumi yells to be heard over the air rushing past us.
Part of me wants to say bollocks if I know, but somehow I don’t think that will go over well. Besides, there’s only one thing we can do at this point. Jump and bloody well pray we land somewhere soft.
