“What does that mean? What are you not putting up with for one second longer?” Just like that, the fight is gone from Hudson, and in its place is a quiet uneasiness that underscores everything I’ve just been trying to say to him.

“It means you need to understand that I’m not going to watch this happen, Hudson. That we’re in this together, no matter what.”

“You don’t know what you’re saying,” he says, and it sounds like the words have been dragged across gravel.

“Of course I know what I’m saying!” I tell him. “How can you think otherwise after everything we’ve been through?”

And then, because I’ve finally got Hudson not trying to run from the conversation, I ask the one question that’s been beating like a drum inside my chest for weeks. “Do you not want me anymore?”

He laughs, but there’s not an ounce of humor in it. “That’s what you think this is about?”

“What else should I think it’s about?” I demand. “You don’t tell me anything.”

“I tell you everything, Grace,” he snaps back. “I shred my fucking pride for you on a daily basis. Give you everything you want without you having to even ask for it. And still, it’s not enough?”

Whoa. “I never asked for that!”

“Of course you didn’t,” he says, his bright blue eyes alight with a fury from within. “You still can’t bring yourself to say what you want, can you?”

“That’s not—I do—” I break off when he crosses his arms over his chest and leans a shoulder against the wall. It’s his defensive, “I’m not going to let you hurt me” posture, and seeing it from him now, directed at me after all this time, has me tripping over my words.

More, it has shame coursing through me. Because all this time, when I’ve been so sure that I know him better than anyone else, it’s never occurred to me that he knows me the same way. That he’s been giving me the space to decide what it is I want—who it is I want.

As much as I know in my heart that what I had with Jaxon was special, I have been sure for a long time now that it pales in comparison to what I feel for Hudson.

Jaxon knew the best parts of me, loved the best parts of me.

Hudson lived in my head for a year…and he saw every part of me. He was privy to every bad mood I’ve ever been in, every mean word I’ve every regretted, every catty thing I may have thought. He knows my every irrational fear, all the things I hate about myself or wish I could change.

And yet, he’s still here. Fighting with me. Laughing with me. Building a life with me.
