And that’s really the rub, I guess. I don’t. “No.”
She blusters for a second. “But—but—you don’t even have your powers here!”
“Yeah, I know. It’s bloody fantastic.” I grit my teeth. “I don’t have shite parents trying to use me. No pseudo friends who are actually scared of me. And honestly, no powers period to scare myself with needing to use. Yeah, I like it here.”
I don’t say the main reason I like it here, though. What it feels like waking up beside her every morning. Sharing a laugh about whatever silly thing Smokey did that day. Or hell, even fighting with her about whose turn it is to do laundry.
But I can’t say any of those things. That would put too much pressure on Grace, and that’s not fair.
“I never really thought of it that way before, Hudson,” she murmurs and looks up at me with soft eyes. “I’m so sorry.”
Well, fuck.
How did this conversation go from time dragons to a fucking pity party?
I run a hand through my hair, try to think of the words she needs me to say.
I want to tell her it’s okay, that I understand. She has a life waiting for her back there. Family she misses, friends…Jaxon. Granted, we’ve only been here a few months, but it’s been obvious from the start she’s struggling to fit in. And I want to tell her I understand.
But I can’t.
I feel like an artic is parked on my chest, and I don’t want to be understanding about it.
So I don’t say anything. I just shove my hands into my pockets and keep walking. I breathe a sigh of relief when she catches up and doesn’t bring up shit she read in my journals.
“I can’t believe there are time dragons hunting us,” she says quietly.
At least, I think that’s what she says. It’s hard to hear anything over the blood rushing out of my heart.
“I guess,” I say. There was a lot Souil said that made sense…but the things he didn’t say left me with even more questions.
“Do you think that big one will come back tonight?” she asks as we turn the corner off the main square to a side street filled with little shops.
“Not likely,” I say. “She probably needs to let that wing heal a bit.”
Grace nods, finally looking up just as we pass a shop window filled with tiny baby clothes. She takes a deep breath, and I almost pass out from the fear of what she’s building up to tell me.
Then she tosses me a half smile and asks, “So, what do you want to do tonight?”
