I can’t believe it.
Two little words and I’m suddenly tongue-tied to hell and back. It’d be embarrassing if I wasn’t also so…happy. It’s a weird feeling, one I’m definitely not used to. Still, I’m trying to stay right here for a while and try not to borrow trouble.
I’ve grown adept at appreciating any small happiness I might have in the moment. Which is why I can be ecstatic Grace wants to be with me today, even if she might be thinking of how not to be with me tomorrow.
When Grace is by my side, it’s even easier than it sounds. Definitely easier than it’s ever been before. And yes, I am exactly aware of how pathetic that is. But that doesn’t make it any less true.
I smile as I remember how excited I was to receive my first paycheck as a teacher, Grace dancing around our room and waving it in the air, chanting “Mr. V rocks” over and over. I can’t help but think Richard would be very proud of me if he saw it, too.
It’s strange to worry about money for the first time in my life. For all of Cyrus’s and Delilah’s flaws—of which there are a legion—they’ve always been generous with their money when it comes to Jaxon and me. And I always took it because I figured it was the least they could do after everything they’ve put me through.
Besides which, as a firstborn prince, I have a huge trust fund given to me by the Vampire Court itself. One that has nothing to do with my parents’ money at all.
But that doesn’t mean I mind having to work for the money to survive here—and the money to be able to pay Arnst back. I like the idea of having money only because I earned it.
We walk along, holding hands, for several minutes, taking in the different storefronts and trying to pretend the other people on the street aren’t staring at us.
Then again, I imagine it’s pretty normal for people to be curious about the vampire and the gargoyle who left a dead dragon on the mayor’s front lawn.
On the plus side, Grace finds a candy store and a flower shop with help wanted signs in the windows. I consider maybe applying for part-time work at the library, since elementary school here lets out by two every afternoon. Besides, the idea of being surrounded by books for a few hours each day sounds like heaven.
