I am. Really fucking hungry. But it’s not like it was at the cave, not yet. I don’t have to drink—I’m uncomfortable, but not in trouble. “I’m fine.”
“I don’t believe you.” She stands up and crosses to me. “You can…you know.”
It’s my turn to roll my eyes. “You’re not my personal blood bank, Grace.”
“Yeah, but what if I want to be?” she whispers.
It’s the last thing I expect to hear. Especially since she hasn’t said a word about the kiss we shared earlier. Then again, neither have I.
The things that happened today that we haven’t talked about yet could fill a library. That kiss. The dragons finding us. The dead dragon on the mayor’s lawn. The injured dragon possibly coming back. And yeah, Grace being a badass gargoyle.
Although, I have to admit, that kiss is top of my list right now.
Since that’s probably why she looks so awkward. Because we’re stuck here, with no hope of going home, we just took a huge step in what I hope is our relationship, and she probably doesn’t know where we stand anymore.
Then again, neither do I.
But I’m not sure if this is the right time to change that.
I don’t have to be able to read her mind to know she’s struggling to find her place in this new world. And that’s without having to also figure out if there’s a we in that future.
So I’ve given her space. Tried to respect her need for time. Tried not to take it personally that she apparently rushed into a bond with my brother at first glance but to even consider liking me, she needs to take her bloody sweet time.
And tonight, it’s taking everything in me not to think about that glowing blue string I saw in her head before we left the lair. Part of me hoped it wasn’t what I thought it might be. Part of me believed it couldn’t be, since Grace was human, after all.
But the smarter side of me kept insisting Grace wasn’t as human as she claimed, which meant…
I swallow the feelings clogging my throat as I stare down into her annoyingly beautiful chocolate eyes. No, now isn’t the time for us to have any sort of heavy conversation about what we may or may not mean to each other.
Not with so many other questions and uncertainties swirling around us. At least, not if I really am sincere in not wanting to put any pressure on her while she figures out what she wants from me.
“What if I want you to feed from me?” she asks again, her chin rising as she bites into her soft bottom lip.
