The door flies open, and Grace stands there in nothing but one of the T-shirts Arnst gave her and a warm, rosy-cheeked glow. “It was in my hair,” she says, enunciating each word slowly and precisely. “Do you have any idea how long it takes to get drying dragon’s blood out of every single curl of my hair?”
“I’m guessing an hour and fifteen minutes,” I deadpan, “judging by how long you were in there.”
“You would be correct. And pounding on the door every five minutes didn’t make it go any faster.”
“To be fair,” I say, lifting a brow as I call her on her fib, “I only knocked three times—and those were all in the last fifteen minutes.”
“Yeah, well, it seemed like more than that.” She sniffs.
“I don’t know what to tell you.” Before she can say anything else, I step into the bathroom and close the door in her face. It won’t take me an hour to get this dragon’s blood off, but however long it does take, I’m anxious to get started.
Twenty minutes later, I step back into the bedroom to find Grace sitting cross-legged in the center of the bed eating a sandwich off a tray of food on her lap. “Nice towel,” she says with a snort. Then, “Nyaz thought we might be hungry after our ‘strenuous activity.’ He sent up some food.”
“We?” I ask, leaning a shoulder against the doorframe so I can watch her. And maybe fantasize a little about what’s under that nightshirt—and whether or not I’ll ever get the chance to see it.
“Okay, he thought I might be hungry.” She rolls her eyes. “But he did include some water for you.”
She sends a bottle soaring across the room to me. I catch it and drain it dry—turns out I’m really bloody thirsty. And not just for water, but it will do for now.
Except Grace is watching me over the top of her sandwich, wet curls tumbling over her shoulders and big brown eyes filled with questions I can’t read and probably don’t have the answers to anyway.
Plus, I can’t spend the whole night in a towel, so I do what I came out here to do in the first place. I grab my last clean pair of boxers—a plain black pair from the package Arnst gave me while we were staying on the farm—and my black sweatpants before I head back into the bathroom to change.
The second time I come out, Grace has already moved the tray to the dresser and is sitting at the end of the bed, looking more nervous than when she was staring down a pissed-off dragon.
“What’s going on?” I ask.
It feels like she’s focusing on a spot behind my shoulder when she says, “You have to be hungry, too.”
