I study her for a second, trying to figure out the right thing to say in this situation. But I’m not sure there is any right thing to say when you’re thinking about drinking someone’s blood, so finally I settle on, “Is that what you want?” It’s simple, clear, to the point.
Except Grace—in typical Grace style—still manages to squeak her way around it. “I don’t want you to be hungry.”
“That’s not the same thing as wanting me to drink from you.” Plus, I’m way too exhausted to do mental gymnastics with her right now. “Let’s just go to sleep, Grace. We can talk about this another time.”
She doesn’t budge. And she doesn’t stop looking at me with those big, soft eyes. “I think you took that the wrong way.”
“How was I supposed to take it?” I lift a brow.
“Like this.” She takes another step forward until her body is practically pressed against mine. Then she goes on tiptoe, loops her arms around my neck. And tilts her head to the side, exposing her jugular.
Because, seemingly, the queen of talking about everything no longer feels the need to talk. And fuck. Just fuck. How the bloody hell am I supposed to resist her? Especially when she smells so good and looks so good and I know—I fucking know—just how good she fucking tastes.
It’s madness even thinking about it.
And yet I do think about it. I do try to resist. For both our sakes. Yes, we kissed. But it was just a kiss. I don’t have a clue what that means to her. I sure as hell don’t know what letting me feed from her so intimately means to her. And shouldn’t I know before this goes any further? Shouldn’t we both know?
“Grace—” Though it kills me, I start to take a step back.
“Don’t,” she tells me as her arms tighten around my neck. “I know you’re confused. I’m confused, too. But please don’t walk away right now. Please, just take what you need from me. I want you to do it.”
Again, she tilts her head.
“Why?” I ask hoarsely, because I need the answer. But my eyes are already fixated on the pulse point at the hollow of her throat—and the way it’s fluttering in and out.
“I need this, too,” she whispers. “I need you.”
It turns out seven little words are all it takes to obliterate a lifetime of self-control and set free the wildness within me. I need this, too. I need you. How can I tell her no when she puts it like that? How can I tell her no when I feel the exact same way?
The truth is, I can’t. So I don’t even try. Not anymore.
