Ignoring the blood and squick factor, I put my arms back out like Superman and aim for Hudson with every ounce of strength and concentration I’ve got. Except I’ve forgotten one thing—the other dragon. She’s finally come out of whatever stunned state she was in and is gunning for us. Gunning for me.
Because of course she is. Two dragons for the price of one. Lucky, lucky me.
“Grace! Look out!” Hudson yells from down below me, like I don’t see the giant dragon bearing down on me with murder in her eyes. Besides, how much “looking out” can I do when I’m focused on getting to him? I’m a good multitasker, but this is ridiculous.
I do manage to avoid the dragon’s first pass at me with a midair somersault I didn’t even know I could do. The somersault has another side benefit, too—it gets me closer to Hudson. But this time, the dragon isn’t fooling around, and she does that weird “skipping through space” thing they do and makes up the distance between us in an instant.
Which eats up too much of the precious time I’ve got left to get to Hudson before he becomes a vampire pancake. So, with very little else left in my tiny repertoire of tricks, I do the only thing I can do. I fly directly beneath the dragon, then come up on her side. When I do, I grab onto her wing, will myself to solid stone again, and pull down as hard as I can.
She lets out a shriek of rage, twisting in midair in an effort to get to me. A shot of flames sluices by me as the dragon bellows again, but I ignore her as I grab onto her wing and pull again. I don’t need to punch through her heart—something I never, ever, ever want to do again. I just need to sprain her wing so she can’t fly. Surely I can manage that with what feels like a thousand pounds of concrete in my ass right now.
I pull on the wing a third time, yanking it out from her body at a weird angle, and it goes all topsy-turvy, her aerodynamics completely messed up. It’s exactly what I’m trying for, so I hang on through the weird spinning roll thing she does and try one more time.
This time, though, she’s so angry she shoots a long, powerful stream of flames right at me. And because I’m attached to her wing, she ends up hitting herself as well—and burning a small hole through her own wing.
Which seems really odd to me. Of all the creatures in the world, shouldn’t dragons be fireproof?
