It doesn’t make sense to me, but then it doesn’t have to make sense. All I need is for the dragon to be incapacitated for a little while, and I think this just might do the trick.

Letting go of her wing as she spins out, I instinctively lose my solid stone body and make a last-ditch dive for Hudson. This time, I manage to grab his hand, but he’s so slippery from the blood—don’t think about it, don’t think about it, don’t think about it—that his fingers slide right through my grasp.

“Don’t worry about me!” he shouts, pointing above me at what I can only assume is a very pissed-off dragon.

I just roll my eyes at him. Because yeah, I’m not going to worry about Hudson plunging to his death. “Grab onto me,” I yell back. And this time when I lunge for him, I manage to get my fingers around his wrist.

“Hold on!” I tell him, and thankfully, he does. His fingers wrap around my wrist as well, and then he drags me closer to him—which is exactly what I need right now.

Because once I’m close enough, I wrap my arms around him like a koala—not pretty or empowering but it gets the job done—and use my wings to fly as fast and as far away from both dragons as I can possibly manage.

The dying one plummets to earth, and I have a moment of feeling awful for the creature. Sure, he was hell-bent on killing me, but he didn’t seem sentient as much as acting on some weird instinct that we needed to die. I don’t question the feeling, but I do my best to shake the remorse and focus on not letting the second dragon finish the job.

I brace for landing—yes, that’s how close it was for Hudson—but the larger dragon, with the hole in her wing, makes one last pass at us. This time Hudson is the one who reaches out and grabs onto her wing. Taking a play from my book, he yanks at the wing using a whole lot of that vampire strength of his, and there’s a sickening crunch just before the eerie sound of canvas ripping fills the air.

The dragon screams and loses control, slamming into the ground. I pull my wings back in two powerful strokes, then land with Hudson as far away from the dragon as I can get. The massive creature tries to wobble to her feet again and then lets loose streams of fire in all directions.

At the same time, the troubadours come running forward, their arms full of rope, and I realize they didn’t abandon us after all. But the moment they try to lasso her, she lets out a shriek of warning as she backs away. And then takes one more step before she disappears.
