Everyone knows this game is rigged, but when I was younger, Heather’s dad taught us a trick that almost never fails. You just line up the ring with the bottle you want it to land on, then take two steps to the right. And instead of throwing it up so that it can come down and land on the bottle, you throw it horizontally.
If the stars align and luck is with you, it will bounce off the bottle two away from the one you’re aiming at, spin, and land directly on top of your bottle.
“You want some tips, young lady?” the old guy running the game asks as I grab my five rings.
“I think I know what to do,” I answer, smiling at him sweetly. Then I stand back and let the first ring rip.
It hits the exact bottle I was aiming at, slamming down over the top and circling the bottle neck.
“Nice job!” The man makes a tally mark on the chalkboard. “That’s one.”
“Show me how you did that,” Hudson says, eyes narrowed as he studies me.
“Oh, look! There’s Lumi!” I tell him and, when he turns around to look, I let the second ring fly.
And watch with satisfaction as it, too, circles a bottle neck.
“Seriously?” Hudson demands, and I don’t know if he’s complaining about the fact that I’ve gotten two out of two or that I played a dirty trick to keep him from watching me. And honestly, I don’t care. All’s fair in love and ring tosses. Especially ring tosses.
“Can you do three for three?” the carnival barker asks, and now he looks a lot more interested in me.
“I can do five for five,” I tell him. And turn my back just enough to obscure Hudson’s view as I throw the third ring.
“Three for three,” Hudson murmurs.
I throw the fourth and fifth, one right after the other, and this time I don’t try to hide what I’m doing. They both land around the bottle necks, and the carnival guy crows, “Good job! I’ve never seen that.”
Hudson just claps, a large grin on his face that makes me grin, too.
“What prize do you want?” the barker asks. “You can have anything here.”
I look at the different stuffed animals, but there’s really only one thing I want. “A flower crown,” I say, pointing to the one I’ve selected.
“You get one for every two rings,” he tells me. “So do you want another one?”
“I do, actually.”
He hands me both, and I put one on my head before leaning down and plopping one on Smokey’s. She squeals and spins, and I straighten up with a laugh. I smile at Hudson, and he looks like he’s about to say something, but he shakes his head.
