She looks surprisingly serious as she tells me, “I’m not talking about the boxers. I’m talking about the rest.”
“The rest?”
“I don’t dislike you. Maybe I did at the beginning, but—” She blows out a breath. “‘Dislike’ is definitely not one of the many, many different things you make me feel.”
“Oh yeah?” Now both my brows are up and I’m leaning in, because this is getting interesting. “How do you feel?”
“Like I want to dance!” she says and takes off through the inn’s cramped little lobby.
It’s my turn to roll my eyes, because I really should have seen that one coming.
We hit the street just as the sun finishes going down. The moment it does, the festival springs to life around us. The lights turn on above our heads. Music fills the air. And hundreds of people pour into the street right in front of us.
“This is amazing!” Grace says as we look out at a village that’s been completely transformed.
Everywhere we look, there are lights. Webs of fairy lights canopy each street, and strings of ornate, different-colored lanterns line the sidewalks. Flowers in every purple shade imaginable are woven through arches and into garlands that decorate everything from street signs to food carts to souvenir stands. They’re also strewn through the streets, their perfume rising up into the air with each step people take on the cobblestones.
“What do you want to do first?” Grace shouts to be heard over the music.
“Whatever you want to do,” I answer. Being with her is pretty much all I want out of this festival.
“Okay, then, I’m starving.” She goes up on her tiptoes, trying to see over the crowd to where the food carts are parked. But since she’s still several inches shorter than almost anybody out here—except for the kids—it doesn’t do her much good.
“Come on.” I take her hand so I don’t lose her in the crowd—or at least that’s the story I’m sticking to—and guide her across the street and down a couple of blocks to where a whole group of food vendors has set up.
“What are you in the mood for?”
“I have no idea what any of this is,” she answers with a laugh. “But it sure smells good.”
We stand there for several minutes as she watches what everyone orders, and eventually she steps up to a lavender cart with huge flowers painted on it and orders something on a stick and a few bottles of water.
I pay the guy, and then we walk through the crowds, her eating her stick thingy while I drink one of the water bottles. Music is playing, and she stops every minute or two to do a spin or shimmy her shoulders or shake her head and wave her curls back and forth.
