Then she launches herself at me and gives me what I’m pretty sure is the world’s most enthusiastic hug. She skips my throat this time, though, so at least I can breathe my way through it.

She’s still hugging me when Grace comes out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel a few minutes later. She freezes when she sees the newly decorated Smokey, then grins hugely.

“You look gorgeous, Smokey!” she tells the small shadow. “That gold really brings out your coloring.”

For once, Smokey preens under her attention, winding her way between Grace’s feet. I, on the other hand, do my best to look anywhere but at the skimpy towel Grace currently has wrapped around her curves.

“Sorry, I forgot my—” She pauses as she catches sight of the dress on the bed. Unlike with Smokey’s present, I knew this dress was for Grace the second it caught my eye.

Short (but not too short like at the audition) and flirty, with a fun skirt that she can move in easily. Back in the lair, Grace told me her prom dress had been red, so I knew she’d like this color, and I’m pretty sure it’ll bring out her eyes—and the pink in her cheeks that I like so much.

“What did you do?” she whispers as she walks over to the bed to touch the dress with featherlight fingers.

“I thought you might like something new. It’s…been a while.”

“It has,” she agrees as she continues stroking the dress. Right before she pulls a Smokey and throws herself at me, hugging me as tightly as she can. And all I can think is that if she wiggles any more, her towel—her thin, skimpy towel that is the only thing separating her body from mine—is going to fall on the floor.

I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a part of me that really, really wanted that to happen.

“Oh my gosh, Hudson, thank you so much!” she tells me. “I love it. I really love it.”

“I’m glad,” I answer as I awkwardly try to hug her back without doing anything to make the towel fall.

She must remember what she’s wearing, though, because the second my hand touches her bare upper back, she jerks away with a gasp. “Why didn’t you tell me I was in a towel?” she screeches.

“You just came from the shower,” I tell her with a lifted brow. “I figured you knew.”

“I forgot! Obviously!” She doesn’t wait for another comeback from me. Instead, she grabs the dress and dives back into the bathroom before slamming the door between us. “I can’t believe you didn’t say something!” she shouts through the wood.

“Just because I’m a vampire doesn’t mean I’m dead,” I call back.
