I end up on the far end of the town square—a part of town we didn’t go to yesterday—and I can’t help but note there’s a huge statue in the center of the square. A shiver races down my spine as I realize it’s comprised of two separate pieces nearly linked together—a woman holding a giant sword and shield and an enormous dragon, ribbons of fire coming from the creature’s mouth and just grazing her forehead and the top of her shield. The whole thing seems impossibly balanced, and I’m careful not to walk too close.

The mayor mentioned the town mascot was the Fighting Dragons, but I had no idea they took their sports team this seriously. This is impressive as fuck, and I can’t help chuckling that they’re lucky their team wasn’t called the Fighting Donkeys.

I backtrack a little until I see another familiar street, then hustle the rest of the way, opening the door of the bakery just as the clock tower strikes ten. Gillie is behind the counter, and she looks up with a smile when I walk in.

“There you are, Grace! Our regular help is out with a family matter for a bit, so I really hope you’re still up for taking the job.”

I’ve never wanted to work in a bakery in my life. I know nothing about pastries except that I like eating them, and almost everything I cook on my own is a total disaster—thus the now-infamous pumpkin pie that Hudson and I tried to bake together. But beggars can’t exactly be choosers when they’ve got to pay for a room at the inn and some new, not Versace, underwear.

Right now, I need a job and this is a job.

“Absolutely,” I tell her. “Where do you want me to start?”

It turns out the person she’s replacing for a bit is actually one of the pastry makers, so I get stationed in the kitchen with a bunch of equipment I barely know how to use.

“One of our biggest sellers are our cream puffs and different flavored eclairs. So I thought I’d get you off with a basic choux pastry recipe.” Gillie smiles at me encouragingly. “It’s really easy.”

“Shoe pastry?” I reply, questioning what exactly I ate last night in that swan. I knew it tasted a little funny.

“Not shoe,” she tells me with a small laugh. “Choux.”

“Shoe,” I repeat.

I’m even more confused when she nods this time and says, “Exactly.”

“Are there any particular kinds of shoes that go into the dough?” I ask, trying to figure out what the hell is happening in my life. And what I’m supposed to do about it.

“Shoes?” For the first time, Gillie looks alarmed. “Why would you put footwear in my pastries?”
