“We’re going to need to find a Laundromat today,” he says, and I’m a little surprised. He hasn’t really said anything to me since we left the mayor yesterday. He said he was tired as soon as we got back to the inn, took a quick shower, and went to bed.

That was it. No teasing glances. No heated looks. No mention of the moment back at the audition. Nothing. Just a quick “I’m tired” and then to bed.

Actually, that isn’t entirely true.

He also rolled to the very edge of his part of the bed, his back to my side, in a very clear message that he was not in the mood to talk, much less accidentally touch me.

I’d eventually drifted off to a fitful sleep, convincing myself that performing like that had just left him unsettled. He was probably feeling vulnerable, and I wanted to respect his need for space.

But by the time I woke this morning, his side of the bed was already cold. Almost as cold as the distance yawning between us. I was going to give him till dinner to work through whatever was on his mind, but after that—all bets were off. I barely made it a day with Polite Hudson. I sincerely doubted I could make it even half that long with Distant Hudson.

For now, I take a deep breath and try to act like his attitude isn’t frustrating the hell out of me. “Or a store,” I counter. “We could use some new clothes.”

“Yeah, but I’d rather just hold on to what we have until we both get jobs, and then we can worry about trying to supplement our very meager wardrobe,” he says.

“We’ll see,” I say as I tie my shoes. “I’m going to head down to the bakery and see if Gillie meant it when she told the mayor she would give me a job.”

“And I’m going to see about finding a job,” he tells me. He pauses, then adds, “Why don’t we plan on meeting back here this afternoon and maybe taking a walk. We can check out more of the village. See what it’s like.”

Relief that he isn’t going to shut me out forever makes me a little dizzy, and I can’t help the smile lighting my face. “That sounds great, Hudson. And we still need to find Caoimhe and the guys. Make sure they didn’t get into any trouble last night after the auditions.”

Hudson just shakes his head. “Somehow, I’m afraid to ask that question.”

“Good point,” I say with a laugh. Then I wave to him and let myself out the door.

Even though Hudson and I walked these streets yesterday, I get a little turned around as I try to head across town to Gillie’s bakery.
