Of course Grace just spilled everything. I have never met anyone with less trust issues than her. And, as frustrating as it is at times, I’d be lying if I didn’t also admit it’s what I love about her most. Well, that and her stubborn chin.

“I’m so sorry to hear that.” He shakes his head, looks annoyed. “I swear, that woman is the scourge of this land. She’s always trying to kill someone.”

“Is she?” I raise one brow. If Orebon and Caoimhe had it right, the queen has it in specifically for us. I still haven’t figured out why, but I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with Grace. And not because she thinks she’s human, either.

I start to ask him more about the queen, but before I can, he continues. “You don’t have to worry about the Shadow Queen here. Adarie is part of her realm, as she rules Noromar, but we’re an independent entity. She and her soldiers have no power here, and they wouldn’t dare to breach these walls. Not while I’m in charge of this village.”

He takes the last bite of his pastry, then pats his mouth with his pink-polka-dotted napkin. “Is there anything else you’re worried about? Maybe I can help put your minds at ease.”

Grace shoots me a look, and I know she’s trying to figure out if we should mention the dragon to him. So am I. If he kicks us out of here, we’re pretty much fucked. But it only seems fair to tell him we’ve had a pissed-off dragon on our arses for more than a year.

Finally, I bite the bullet and just tell him about the dragon. Amazingly, he doesn’t even look surprised. “Yes, I’ve heard of dragons attacking when a stranger first arrives in the Shadow Realm, but they are of no consequence.” He waves his hand negligently. “You’ll be safe in Adarie.”

“You’re not concerned?” Grace sounds surprised, and I don’t blame her. This dragon is scary as hell, and the idea of him attacking Adarie and hurting a bunch of innocent people bothers the shit out of me. Why the hell doesn’t it also bother the fuck out of the mayor?

“Of course not. We may be the home of the Fighting Dragons, but an actual dragon hasn’t been seen here in centuries. I should know: I’ve been mayor here for nearly two hundred years, lived here a lot longer, and we have never had a problem on my watch.”

“Never?” Grace repeats.

He looks down at his nails, rubs them absently against his chest. “Dragons aren’t a problem here.”

A feeling of unease skates along my spine as I study the mayor. Grace would say I’m just used to the worst in everyone, but something about his demeanor just seems off.
