But I just shake my head, my poker face in full force. Which is more difficult than it should be, considering our circumstances. But it’s hard to take a mayor dressed like Ziggy Stardust seriously.
Then again, it’s hard to take anyone dressed like Ziggy Stardust seriously when we’re fifty years past the seventies.
As we take our seats, he offers us both a too-broad smile. “Welcome, my friends! It’s so good to have you here in Adarie.” His voice booms through the small café, and everyone in it turns to stare at Grace and me.
“Thank you so much. I love pastries,” Grace says as she places a cookie on a small plate. I can tell she’s trying to be her most cordial, conciliatory, charming self. I make a note to ask her where this Grace is whenever she’s talking to me. I figure it will piss her off to no end, so I’m going to make sure to save it for when I really need it. She adds, “And this is the cutest one I’ve ever seen.”
“You’ll find a lot of things in Adarie are the best you’ve ever seen,” the mayor says. “Then again, that might just be me. I love this place.”
He leans back in his chair and takes another sip from his tiny cup. He watches us over the rim as he does, then puts the cup down and asks, “That was some audition, eh?”
“We did okay,” I tell him shortly, because bonding over swan pastries or not, I’m still not sold on this guy.
Grace tosses me a “don’t be rude” look, then says, “We were actually hoping to talk to you, too, Mayor.”
“Call me Souil, please,” he corrects her. “Everyone around here does.”
“Souil,” she repeats with another smile, while I resist the urge to roll my eyes. I don’t know who this super sweet Grace is, but she is sending me into pastel-colored sugar shock. And considering I’m a vampire, that’s saying a lot.
“And what can I call you?” he asks with a smile.
“Oh, right.” Grace practically trips over the words falling out of her mouth. “I’m Grace, and this is Hudson.”
“Nice to meet you, Grace and Hudson,” Souil says. Then, after a few more seconds pass, he asks, “What brings you to our lovely town?”
“You do, actually,” I tell him.
“Moi?” He presses a hand to his sequin-covered chest and looks completely surprised. “How did you hear about me?”
“Our friends told us about you,” Grace says. “They mentioned that you might be able to help us. We’ve been running from the Shadow Queen’s soldiers for days now, and we’re just trying to find a safe place to stay.”
