Orebon immediately starts playing a song we’d heard them practicing on the walk down the mountain and skips out behind me as Caoimhe and Lumi pick up the harmonies with ease. Hudson’s shoulders relax as he joins the guitar playing, but he shuffles to the back of the group as quickly as he can, the troubadours clearly comfortable in the spotlight.
And they’re good. Really good.
The song seems to fly by, and in no time, we’re all grinning and heading back offstage to the sound of thunderous applause.
When we get backstage, Caoimhe and Lumi and Orebon are all chattering ninety miles an hour about the size of the crowd and how much fun that was. Hudson hasn’t said a word yet.
He just walks over and sets his guitar down where he’d picked it up from earlier, his gaze not quite meeting mine. When he shoves his hands into his pockets, rubs the bottom of one of his shoes back and forth across the wood floor, I suddenly realize he’s nervous.
It’s an emotion I rarely ever associate with him, so it takes me a moment to figure it out, but once I do, I walk right up to him and slide my arms around his waist, press my cheek against his chest, and whisper, “Thank you.”
He hesitates, then slowly, so very, very slowly, pulls his hands from his pockets and hugs me back. “Did I do Harry justice?” he asks, his warm breath brushing across the top of my head.
I smile. “Harry who?”
He chuckles. “I hope the troupe doesn’t mind I hogged the spotlight for a bit.”
“Are you kidding?” I joke, leaning back to share a smile. “Caoimhe almost threw her panties at you. So did Orebon and Lumi.”
Hudson raises one brow, his turbulent blue eyes as fathomless as the ocean, and asks, “What about you?”
If nothing else, the last year I’ve spent with Hudson has taught me one thing: always keep this boy on his toes.
Which is why I shake my head in a poor-little-Hudson manner and murmur, “Who says I’m wearing any?”
His eyes widen for a second, just a second, and then something moves in his gaze that has me freaking out under all the cool attitude I’m trying so hard to project. Something predatory and altogether terrifying—as scary as it is exciting.
My heart beats like a wild thing and my blood roars in my ears. I take a few deep breaths, tell myself to calm down. Tell myself that he’s probably just hungry.
As if he can read my thoughts still, his eyes move from my face to my lips to the pulse beating too hard at the base of my throat. They linger at that pulse point, which only makes my heart beat faster, and I swear I see the tip of a fang scrape against his lower lip.
