“Yeah, but—” I wave a hand, not wanting to say out loud what is so obvious to me. Namely, that he’s completely drained, and I’m not sure he can handle fading for five seconds, let alone five minutes.

“I’ve got this, Grace.” As if to prove it, he just swoops me up in his arms bride-style instead of arguing about it anymore. “Which way?”

I’ve spent enough time around Hudson at this point to know when arguing is fruitless, and this is definitely one of those times. So I shove down all my concerns, grit my teeth, and let him do his manly-man thing of getting us to the cave.

It takes three minutes to get there, not five, even with stopping to pick up the Band-Aid trail, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t appreciate that fact very much. As it is, Hudson doesn’t even have the energy to tease me about it. Which is a good thing because I definitely don’t have the energy to clap back.

Instead, we stumble into the cave like zombies. Hudson takes about two minutes to check the place out and deem it acceptable before collapsing on the ground. Another time, I might have been offended that he didn’t trust me, but I’m the first one to admit that in the dark, vampire vision is definitely superior to human. And since I want no creepy-crawly—or any other—surprises in the middle of the night, I feel much better now that he’s checked it out, too.

Not quite good enough to just lay down on the cave ground, however. Instead, I get out one of the little blankets Arnst packed for us and spread it out. Then I urge Hudson onto it. He’s awake, but he’s not looking good.

Pale, gaunt, exhausted. Even his breathing is shallower than normal. I know vampires are immortal, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still die. And Hudson is definitely looking near death’s door at the moment. Which I am so not okay with.

Originally, I’d planned to wait until tomorrow to have this argument with him, but judging from how he looks at this moment, I’m not so sure waiting is the best option. Or any option, to be honest.

“Hudson—” I start, but he cuts me off.

“I’m fine, Grace.”

It’s such a patently absurd statement that I don’t even bother arguing with him. Especially since he’s slurring his words. Instead, I do the only thing I can think of that might get results. The only thing that will show him that I am totally okay with this. The only thing that he might actually believe.
