But Grace just grins. “You’re nowhere near as bad as you think you are. And even if you were, it wouldn’t matter. You’re my friend. And I want you to do this.”

Her words are the last straw, filling up a void in me that I rarely let myself think about. I stop retreating—mentally and physically—and for the first time take a step toward her.

That step, and the acceptance it signifies, must be what she’s waiting for. Because just like that, she’s beside me, moving into my space. “I don’t know where you like to…”

“Bite?” I finish for her.

She blushes a little bit, but her eyes are steady on mine as she nods. Then she reaches up and pulls her hair to one side, exposing her jugular.

And fuck is it tempting to just go for it, to pull her close enough that I can feel all her gorgeous curves pressing against me as I drink from her. But that’s not what we are to each other—not what I am to her—and I don’t know if I can control myself with that much sensory overload anyway.

Plus, I’m smart enough to figure that’s how Jaxon fed from her, and I’m asshole enough that I don’t want my first time drinking from her to be the same as his. She’s showing me a kindness, yes, but I still want her to know exactly who’s drinking from her.

I don’t tell her any of that, though. Instead, I just reach forward and use my fingers to gently brush her hair back where it belongs. Then, because I can, I let my fingers linger on her cheek for just a second.

She looks startled, but when I smile at her, she smiles back.

That’s when I take her hand.

“What are you—”

“It’s okay,” I tell her as I turn her arm over to reveal the soft, delicate skin of her inner forearm.

“Oh.” Her eyes grow wide.

I stroke my thumb over the web of green-blue veins that coalesce at her wrist. “Okay?” I ask, even as the hunger rises up and threatens to tear me apart. “You can still change your mind.”

“I’m not changing my mind.” Her mouth quirks into a mischievous little smile, and she lifts her wrist toward my mouth. “Do your worst.”

“Don’t I always?” Then, because I don’t want her to have to awkwardly hold her arm up while I feed, I drop to my knees at her feet.

Again, she looks surprised, but she doesn’t say anything. And she doesn’t pull away.

Still, I bend my head slowly, giving her a chance to change her mind. She doesn’t take it.

So I lift her hand to my mouth and press a soft, open-mouthed kiss against her palm in silent thanks.
