It’s a little anticlimactic, but I’ll take that over having to fight off a wild animal any day. Or a swarm of insects. Or—I shut down the line of thought before my overactive imagination gets the best of me. Again.

Knowing that the cave is empty is all I really need, so I don’t bother to try to explore any more. Instead, I crawl out of the cave to head back toward Hudson. I still haven’t found water—something I really need to do—but every instinct I have is screaming for me to get him out of the sun and into that cave as soon as possible.

Besides, maybe vampires have some superspecial water-finding abilities that I don’t know about. Stranger things have happened to me since I found out about paranormals.

Exhaustion beats at me with every step I take back toward Hudson. I tell myself it’s just an adrenaline crash from my whole “crawling into the cave” freak-out, but that doesn’t make it any easier for me to keep walking. Especially when all I really want to do is curl up next to a tree and sleep.

But I can’t do that, not yet. Hudson got us this far. It’s my job to get us over the last little stretch to safety—or at least, relative safety. And I’m not going to drop the ball, not now when we’re so close.

So I force my eyes open, force myself to keep putting one foot in front of the other as I follow the trail of Band-Aids I left for myself along the path.

Finally, finally, I see the largest bandage I stuck to the bottom of the first tree I came across, and I speed up. The sooner I get to Hudson, the sooner we can get back to the cave. The sooner we get to the cave, the sooner I can sleep.

Hudson is still asleep when I make it back to him, and waking him up is no easy feat. But once he’s finally awake and I explain my plan, he’s completely on board.

“Sorry I passed out like that,” he tells me as he climbs to his feet.

“It’s okay. I just think we really need some shade. Not hanging out in the open, waiting to be discovered, sounds like a smart idea, too.”

He hands me the backpack, then starts to squat down so I can climb on his back, but I shake my head. “No way. You’re still exhausted. I’ll walk.”

“How long did it take you to get to the cave?” he asks, brow raised.

“About ten minutes,” I answer reluctantly, because I know where he’s going.

“We’ll be there in five if I fade us.”
