Turns out, the answer is quite a lot. Of course it’s so heavy. Besides the water bottles, he included two tins of Maroly’s homemade granola bars for me, an extra change of clothes for each of us, a couple of tiny folded-up squares that I’m pretty sure is Noromar’s answer to a space blanket, a red crystal I saw Maroly light a fire with, a pocketknife, a first aid kit, and a small pouch filled with money. He also packed a few of the little sugary candies I enjoyed, and I kind of want to kiss him right now as I plop one in my mouth and continue to inventory and repack the contents of the bag.
Eventually, the hunger gnawing at my insides can’t be ignored. I want to scarf down one of the granola bars so badly, my mouth won’t stop watering, and I reach for the tin and have the lid open before I force myself to close it. I can’t believe how hungry I am, considering I was just along for the ride for the last seven hours. I can’t imagine what Hudson must be feeling, which is why I can’t bring myself to eat in front of him.
I swallow hard and slide the pack over to Hudson so he can use it for a pillow again if he wants.
Except he doesn’t snag it like I thought he would. In fact, he doesn’t even move, which means he’s sleeping heavier than I’ve ever seen him.
Convinced I need to find a solution to his feeding problem, I grab the first aid kit from the backpack. Then I look both ways, trying to figure out my best bet to find water or shelter and finally decide I have no freaking idea.
In the end, I choose left because why not. And because the last thing I want is for Hudson to have to come find me, I note my path with a Band-Aid from the kit every two feet or so.
This high up the mountain, it feels like I can just reach out and touch the sun. So it also feels extra hot beating down on me as I stumble around. And if I manage to find water, I’ll at least get to have a sponge bath. After Hudson’s experience back at the farm, I’m not exactly excited at the prospect of jumping in anything that isn’t a professionally plumbed shower.
I’ve been walking for nearly ten minutes before I finally hit pay dirt in the form of a small cave on the side of the mountain. The entrance itself is so tiny that I nearly miss it, but something tells me to check it out.
