Not even when I went on that abysmal hunger strike in my emo tween years. At the time, I was sure if I kept it up long enough, my father would cease his monthly torturing of me.
If he knew I hated being buried alive so much that I was willing to jeopardize my life to stop it, surely he would put an end to it. At least for a little while.
It didn’t work. But it did teach me two lessons.
One, the only thing my father has ever loved about me is the weapon he worked so hard to turn me into. And two, it’s dangerous to be this hungry.
After I’d been on the hunger strike for eight months, I slipped up. It was early morning, right after my father had me raised from the Descent, and I was still a little woozy and disoriented. I was also starving.
One of our human maids was cleaning my antechamber, and she dropped a glass dish. When she bent to pick it up, she cut herself on one of the shards. The scent of her blood filled the room, and I couldn’t hold myself back. I attacked her.
Somehow, I stopped myself before I drained her, but it was too close. Even knowing that every human who works at the Court gives their consent to being fed from doesn’t make my guilt about that incident any easier to bear.
She didn’t fight me, didn’t even try to stop me. I had her consent. And still I nearly killed her. Still I almost took too much.
I’d gone eight months without feeding then. Now I’ve gone two and a half years, fought a dragon, and run more than two hundred miles at the fastest clip I’ve ever run. Hunger is a wild animal within me, clawing at my guts. Tearing at my soul with every breath I take.
I can keep it in check, but not if I drink from Grace. Not if I taste her. She thinks I’m being stubborn, but she has no idea what’s inside me at this very moment.
I’ve finally made it halfway up the wall, and I’m searching around for a handhold deep enough that I can use it to pull us up. I finally find one about three feet to the left of where I’d been hoping to find one. Add in that it’s so high that I’ve got to strain to reach it, and I know this is going to be a difficult pull. Not impossible—few things are—but not easy, either.
“Hold on,” I mutter to Grace, who nods just enough that her strawberry-scented hair tickles my nose.
Then she does as I instructed and tightens her arms around me. Which only succeeds in pressing the rest of her more tightly against me, too. Maybe not the best suggestion on my part.
