But I’m not falling for it. Not now, when our entire escape—our very safety—depends on him being healthy enough to get over those mountains. There were a few times Hudson had slowed enough for me to tell that he’d run north most of the way but eventually he’d headed east toward Adarie. I don’t know how far we are from the town, but my best guess is we’re still about thirty miles west and fifty miles north—and a rugged mountain range still sits squarely between us.
“You need to feed.” Unlike earlier by the lake, it’s a statement and not a question.
He sighs heavily. “I’m fine.”
“You’re not. Obviously. And I know I was only at Katmere Academy for a couple of weeks, but I never once saw a vampire there look like you do right now.”
That has him sitting up in a hurry. “So sorry if I don’t live up to the standards set by your precious Jaxon.”
“That’s not what I meant, and you know it!” I tell him. “I’m just worried about you—”
“Yeah, well, don’t.” He pushes to his feet and what? I’m supposed to pretend I don’t see the fact that he’s swaying back and forth? “I’ve got this.”
“Why are you being so stubborn?” I demand. “Is it really such a hardship to consider feeding from me? I promise I won’t read anything into it.”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about.” He rolls his eyes. “In case you haven’t noticed, Princess, we’re on the run.”
“I am well aware of that,” I tell him through clenched teeth. I’m not going to fight with him. I’m not going to fight with him. I’m not going to fight with him. I make those seven words my new mantra as I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I also know you’re doing all the heavy lifting for this run, which means you need to replenish the energy you’re putting out. That’s just basic science.”
“It is,” he agrees. “You know what else is basic science?” He points at the sky. “The fucking sun that never fucking sets in this fucking realm. And since you’re obviously the expert on vampires after two whole weeks at Katmere, tell me, please, how this whole feeding plan of yours is supposed to work if the sun never sets.”
Oh, shit. I blink up at him. “I forgot about the ‘not going out in the sun when you drink human blood’ thing.”
“Yeah, apparently.” He shoves his hands into his pockets and looks out over the mountains, jaw working.
“We still have a problem, though. You’re not going to make it all the way over the mountains if you don’t eat. Not without hurting yourself.”
