I manage it, though—and, with a little support from Hudson, even manage not to fall on my ass once my feet are back on the ground. It’s a close call, though, and Hudson looks at me with remorse.

“I’m sorry. Next time, we’ll stop sooner, give you a break.”

“I’m more worried about you.” For the first time ever, Hudson is sweating. Plus, he looks paler than usual, his cheeks slightly gray and his normally lush red lips a disturbing shade of bluish-purple. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine.” He shrugs off my concern like it’s nothing. “I just need to take a breather for a few minutes.”

“Take as long as you need,” I tell him as we settle on the ground. And by settle, I mean collapse.

The trees around us are like the ones by the lake—upside down, with their branches running against the ground—so there’s not a lot of shade for us to hide in. We do our best to find a little bit of protection from the ceaselessly beating sun, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to be burned soon enough.

Or die from thirst.

Although…maybe Arnst thought of that. Sitting up, I reach for the backpack and drag it out from under Hudson’s head.

“Hey!” he grouses. “I was using that.”

“As a pillow.” I roll my eyes. “I’ve got a better use for it.”

He starts to give me more of a hard time, but when he realizes I’ve got the bag open and am pawing through it, he stops complaining.

“Anything useful in there?”

“Yeah, actually.” I toss him one of the six water bottles Arnst packed for us and take one for myself. “Don’t drink it all in one go,” I tease.

Hudson just unscrews the cap and downs half the contents in one long swallow. “Are there more?” he asks.

“Yeah, a few.”

He just nods and finishes his, then lays back down on the ground and closes his eyes.

I’m worried about him.

I’ve never seen him look tired before, and right now he looks really, really tired. To be fair, for most of our acquaintance, we were stuck in a room together doing almost nothing. Pretty hard to get tired like that.

But even at the farm or after that massive dragon fight, he never looked like this. Just completely worn out.

“Hey,” I say after several long minutes pass and he doesn’t so much as move. “You doing okay?”

He opens one eye and looks at me suspiciously. “Yes. Why?”

“I don’t know. You just look…”

The eye closes again. “Like I ran two hundred miles with another person on my back?” There’s just enough snark in his tone to get my back up. But I think it’s deliberate on his part—a distraction to get me off the scent.
