Hudson runs flat-out for miles with me as his own personal backpack. I try to make myself as light as I can, but there’s not a lot I can do in this situation—except hold on tight so he doesn’t have to worry about me falling off.

It’s not something I want to worry about, either—not at these speeds. For the first time in my life, I understand what it must be like to be a Formula 1 racer, and I have to say, I don’t understand the appeal. Not when one tiny little mistake could mean instant death.

Just thinking like that has panic balling in the depths of my stomach, however, and me freaking out isn’t going to help Hudson. It sure as hell isn’t going to keep the two of us alive. So I push that thought away and hold on tight, not just to Hudson but to my own personal control, and promise myself it’s almost over.

Which it will be at some point.

Just not now.

For the first time since Maroly told me I had power—magic—I wish it were true. If I did, I’d find a way to use it to get the Shadow Queen’s henchmen off our back. Find a way to use it to keep Hudson and me safe.

I don’t know how long Hudson runs. Time doesn’t seem real when the world around you is no more than a blur of streaming light.

At one point, though, Hudson slows down enough for me to notice a crevice in the ground, yawning wide and deep in front of us. My heartbeat is like a jackhammer in my chest as he pours on the speed again, and I figure out exactly what he plans on doing.

“Whoa, what are you do—” I break off as he leaps over the thing like a damn gazelle.

And then he leaps over another crack in the earth, this one even wider than the first.

I scream a little—I can’t help it—and bury my face against the top of his shoulder. There are some things a girl really doesn’t need to see. Especially one who’s a lot more at the whim of gravity than Hudson seems to be.

We have to have been traveling for nearly two hours, but we finally make it through the broken, boulder-strewn terrain. My arms and legs are completely numb, though I don’t want to say anything, not when Hudson is the one doing the heavy lifting. But I’m tired, and I really could use a break.

I have to wonder if Hudson really can’t read my mind anymore, because he only runs another five minutes or so before he finally stops for a breather. Which should be exciting to me, but uncramping my legs after my two-hour piggyback ride isn’t what I would call easy.
