“Mom’s in the garden,” Tiola says. “And Dad’s in the milk barn. Where do you want to go?”
“Garden,” I tell her.
“Milk barn,” Hudson answers at the exact same time.
“You think you can milk something?” I ask. “Really?”
“Stranger things have happened. Besides,” he snarks, “humans do it regularly. How hard can it be?”
“Some humans do it regularly,” I correct. “Most of us stay as far away as we can get.”
“Milking’s fun.” Tiola interrupts our bickering. “I’ll take you there, Hudson, and we can show Grace Mom’s garden on the way.”
As we walk back toward the group of buildings to the left of the main house—thankfully at a much slower pace than we got to the lake—I ask Tiola, “So when you say garden, you mean something different than the crops you guys grow?”
“Oh, yes. Definitely. Mom grows about a hundred different things. It’s how she feeds us mostly.”
“That’s so cool. I can’t wait to see it.” I’m not a huge gardening fan by any means, but I helped my mom grow and pick the herbs for her teas back home in San Diego. It’ll be nice to muck around in the dirt a little, picking food that will immediately be used.
Besides, the real reason I want to garden—or do anything that will keep me busy—is so I don’t have time to dwell on the fact that this is it. This place, these people, even the nefarious Shadow Queen who will supposedly kill us if she finds us…this is my new life. Forever.
I know Maroly asked her friend to find out all she can about the barrier, but I think deep in my soul, I already know the truth. We’re never going home.
I’m not even a little surprised when the admission has me gulping to catch my breath, my chest tightening as a panic attack starts to take hold. I glance at Hudson out of the corner of my eye, curious if he can sense my rising panic. I’ve grown used to him in my head and knowing what’s on my mind, knowing exactly how to calm me down.
But he seems completely oblivious to my inner struggle.
A giant smile is stretched across his face as Tiola chatters a mile a minute about the joys of milking some animal called a tago. His right hand absently scratches Smokey behind her…ear?…while his left cradles her against his chest like a baby. Out of nowhere, I get a vision of an older Hudson, walking with his own children one day, a look of pure happiness lighting his electric-blue eyes, softening the creases around his mouth, and I swallow.
He chuckles at something Tiola says and tosses me a conspiratorial look—and winks. I have no idea what she said, but Hudson winked at me.
