“Where is the nearest village?” I ask, glancing up at the dark, craggy mountains that seem to loom over everything. “Hudson and I didn’t see anything besides your farm out here at all.”

“That’s because our farm is the only thing on this side of the mountains for many miles.” Maroly pulls several thick weeds with giant thorns out of the ground like it’s nothing and adds them to the growing pile beside us.

I glance at her hands, expecting them to be torn and bleeding from her efforts, but they’re as smooth and perfect as they were yesterday when she was serving us dinner.

How is that possible? The thorns were all over the stalks of those weeds. There’s no way she was able to avoid them. Which means what exactly? That her skin is different than human skin? Less easy to puncture?

It’s a wild thought, especially considering it looks the same as my skin. But as she pulls up a bunch more weeds of the same type—again without any damage to herself—I figure it’s got to be true.

To test my hypothesis, I reach for one of the same kind of weeds. And pull my hand back with a muttered curse as several of the thorns draw blood immediately.

“Oh, be careful!” Maroly tells me as I pop my injured finger in my mouth. “Did it get you?”

“Just a little,” I answer. “It was my own carelessness.”

“Why don’t you stick to that section over there,” she says, nodding toward the area I think is lettuce. “Those weeds tend to be a little less aggressive.”

I move over to check out that section, and it turns out Maroly’s right. So I spend the next hour crawling up one row and down the other, yanking every weed I see.

Maroly does the same, and by midmorning we’ve got the entire garden free from trespassers. “Now comes the fun part!” she tells me as we carry the weeds to a nearby composting bin.

“Picking the vegetables?” I venture.

“Exactly. Coming out here and pulling stuff for a couple days’ worth of meals is one of my favorite things about this farm. For a while, it was the only thing I liked.”

“So you didn’t always live here?” We head back to the garden, and I watch in awe as Maroly pulls a bunch of purple asparagus-looking things out of the ground.

“Me?” She laughs. “Oh, God no. This farm has been in Arnst’s family for generations, but I’ve only been farming for about twelve years. We met at university and fell in love, but I had no idea what I was getting into when I took the leap and followed him here.”

It’s her turn to look at the mountains. But unlike my distrust of them, her expression fills with wistfulness the longer she looks at them.
