But even as the words leave my mouth, I know. Because there, on the lake, is the most beautiful bevy of swans I have ever seen. There must be two hundred of the birds, ranging from the lightest lemon yellow to the brightest gold, swimming over the surface of the clear purple lake.
“We almost missed it,” Tiola whispers so quietly that I can barely hear her.
“Almost missed what?” I ask, keeping my voice low as I step closer to Hudson.
But the second I’m next to him, Smokey hisses in outrage. Annoyed by her possessive behavior at this point—especially since I have no designs, romantic or otherwise, on her new favorite person—I hiss back, twice as loud.
It startles a laugh out of Hudson, which in turn must startle the swans on the lake. Because, as one, they take to the sky.
“This!” Tiola squeals, clapping now that she doesn’t have to worry about disturbing the swans. “We almost missed this.”
At first, I’m not sure what she’s talking about. Because sure, the swans are flying, but— Oh!
As one, they turn over, diving backward until they form two perfectly synchronized circles. As one, they spin around and around—seven times, I count—getting closer to the water after each spin. On the final circle, they pull out from the bottom, one after another, then take off flying across the sky in a perfect V formation.
“That was…” Hudson begins, but then his voice drifts off like he has no words, and I totally understand. Because I don’t, either. For the first time in my life, I understand why a group of swans is sometimes referred to as a ballet. Swan Lake indeed.
“Told you you’d like it,” Tiola says smugly.
“You’re right,” Hudson agrees, reaching out a hand to ruffle her hair. “Thank you for showing us.”
Smokey, who is still on his chest, whines a little at the gesture until he reaches down and gives her a pat as well. Then she goes back to making those weird purring-adjacent sounds that are like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
“Hey, do you happen to know where your mom and dad are?” I ask. “We were hoping they could point us to something we could help with on the farm.”
“You want to help?” Tiola sounds so skeptical that I burst out laughing.
“I know we don’t look like much,” I answer, wrapping an arm around her shoulders for a quick hug, “but surely there’s something we can do that we won’t mess up.”
“Surely,” Tiola agrees, but she sounds about as confident as I feel when I walk near Hudson while he’s holding Smokey. Like, maybe it will be fine, or maybe I’ll end up getting a giant chunk taken out of my ass by a tiny little shadow. Both feel equally possible.
