“I don’t know,” I answer with a surprised shrug. When I turn back to Smokey, I ask, “Do you want me to put you down?”
In answer, Smokey plasters herself to my chest, thinning out so that she’s wrapped around my midsection like a belt. Or more likely a corset, I realize, as she starts to squeeze.
“It’s okay,” I say, patting her a little awkwardly. “You don’t have to get down.”
She lets out a soft sigh in response, like everything is right with her world.
“Why don’t you try petting her again?” I tell Grace. “Maybe she was just feeling insecure balanced on my hand like that.”
“Maybe,” Grace says doubtfully. But again, the second she tries to pet the umbra, the little creature goes into full attack mode. Hissing, striking out, screaming like a berserker on a battlefield.
“Okay then!” Grace holds both her hands up in surrender. “I promise I won’t touch you again.”
Smokey mewls in agreement and settles back against me.
Grace and I roll our eyes at each other, but I can’t help grinning just a little. Nothing—no one—in my life has ever chosen me over someone else before. They’ve certainly never liked me better. It’s a good feeling, and I find myself petting and crooning to Smokey as we walk down the porch steps.
Which has her moving up from my waist and resting one of her corners on my shoulder, like a baby rests their head.
“I think that thing’s in love with you,” Grace mutters under her breath.
“Don’t be jealous,” I tease her with a grin. “I’m sure you’ll find a friend soon.”
“I should have known this would make you insufferable.” She looks to the heavens. “One shadow picks you, and you think you’re the best thing ever.”
“I’ve always known I was the best thing ever,” I say. “You’re just mad because Smokey’s a better judge of character than you are.”
“Yeah, that’s what it is.” Sarcasm drips from her voice. “How’d you guess?”
“I’m just perceptive like that,” I answer as I scratch one of Smokey’s round blobs poking out on top of her head almost like rounded ears. It must be the right thing to do, considering the way she makes a high, repetitive sound in the back of her throat. If she were a cat, I’d say she was purring. As it is, the closest description I can think of is yodeling.
Because it looks like yodeling shadows are a thing here in Noromar. A quick glance at Grace tells me she’s about to jump out of her skin at the noise, but now that I’m past the shock factor, I find it oddly soothing. It’s nice to have immediate feedback that I’m doing this whole friend thing right.
