The shadows are still wrapped around Tiola, cuddling with her hair, talking to her, even playing what looks an awful lot like hide-and-seek behind her elbows and knees.

One of the larger shadows—about the size of a beach ball—must get bored, though, because it slides off her and plasters itself over and around my feet.

“Oh, sorry,” I tell it, stepping back to get out of its way. It takes more effort than I thought, though, and for the first time I realize these shadows have mass. They aren’t just shapes caused by something getting between a light source and the ground. They’re actual, real creatures.

Something that becomes very obvious as the shadow follows me. It darts between my ankles before sliding around my calves and creeping over my knees.

Despite my jeans, I can feel the chill of it on my skin, and I can’t help shivering a little. Partly from the coolness of it sliding over me and partly from the fact that this is one more thing that I can’t believe is happening.

Shadows aren’t alive. They certainly aren’t sentient. But as this shadow creeps up my arm to brush against my neck and flutter through my hair, it certainly feels real.

At first, I’m afraid to move—the last thing I want to do is upset this thing that I know nothing about—but eventually it perches on my chest and slaps its hands (if those things can even be called hands) against my cheeks as it chitters on and on at me in a language I absolutely don’t understand.

“Hey! That hurts a little!” I tell it, reaching down to pull it away from my face.

As I do, I’m struck by how smooth and almost slimy its surface feels. And how familiar. Which doesn’t make sense until I notice it feels an awful lot like the stingrays I used to get to pet at the aquarium near my house in San Diego.

It chitters at me some more in a voice that sounds very much like it’s scolding me. And then it slides off my chest and straight down into my shirt.

“Hey!” Surprised and a little afraid—do shadows bite?—I look to Hudson for help.

But he’s too busy laughing his ass off to do much of anything else. I shoot him a “thanks for nothing” glare.

“Oh, don’t worry!” Tiola tells me. “Smokey’s friendly. She won’t hurt you.”

“Yeah, Grace. Smokey won’t hurt you,” Hudson piles on with a wicked grin. But he finally comes over to see if he can help. “Hey, Smokey. Why don’t you—”

He breaks off as the shadow pulls up the bottom of my shirt to escape and literally launches herself from my belly into his arms. He catches her with a startled, “There’s a good girl.”
