Smokey responds by sliding up his chest to curl around his neck. And then she starts to coo like a freaking turtledove.

Tiola’s father laughs. “Looks like you’ve got yourself a new friend.”

“Looks like,” Hudson answers, and he doesn’t sound disgruntled about it at all. More like bemused, and I can’t help thinking about whether Hudson has ever had a pet before. Or a friend, for that matter, who wasn’t his tutor. I didn’t find evidence of either in his journals, and I wonder about what that must have been like for him.

“Well, Lost Things, let’s head on up to the house so you can tell us your story,” Tiola’s father says with a grin. “I’m Arnst, by the way. And this is Maroly.” He nods toward his wife.

“I’m Grace,” I tell him with a smile. “And this is Hudson. Thank you so much for your help. I don’t know what we would have done if we hadn’t happened upon your farm.”

“You look resourceful,” Maroly says with a gentle smile. “I’m sure you two would have been fine. But we’re glad you’re here. Tiola loves having company.”

We follow them across the front yard to the house with its cheerful front porch filled with pots of flowers and what look like herbs—all in varying shades of purple, of course.

When we get to the doorway—accompanied by Tiola and her dozens of shadow friends—Maroly turns around with a fierce frown. “No! You stay out here!”

“Oh, sorry!” I rear back, embarrassed to have misunderstood. “We’ll—”

Arnst cracks up, and his laugh is as big as he is. It fills up the whole covered porch and spills out into the air all around us.

“Oh, not you, Grace!” Maroly tells me with a rueful shake of her head. “The umbras. They aren’t allowed in the house, and they know it. They’re just trying to take advantage of the fact we have company.”

She gives the writhing mass of shadows—the umbras—a stern look. “Go!” Then she turns the look to Hudson. “And that includes you, Smokey. Give that poor boy some peace.”

Smokey’s only response is a mournful howl that has Arnst laughing even harder. Especially when Tiola joins in.

“Smokey’s trouble,” Tiola explains through her giggles. “She likes to give Mom a hard time.”

“A hard time doesn’t exactly cover it,” Maroly says with a sniff. “Don’t make me turn the water on you, Smokey. Get off that boy.”

This time, the sound Smokey makes is more like a wail. High-pitched and shiver-inducing.

“Yes, yes, yes. I know you like him.” Maroly reaches over and plucks the umbra off Hudson’s neck, which isn’t an easy feat, considering she does her best to hang on to his throat.
