But the snake is the least of our problems—and so are her parents—because it only takes a few moments for us to be surrounded by a variety of creatures, from snakes to birds to small, furry mammals. All of which are constantly shifting from dark purple to black to translucent and back again. And all of which are heading straight for Tiola.

“What’s happening?” I ask, positioning myself on the other side of Tiola just in case.

“They’re my friends!” she tells Hudson, tugging at his arm so he’ll step out from in front of her. “They won’t hurt me.”

“Your friends?” Hudson lowers his arms as her words register, but he doesn’t move. “These…”

“Umbras,” she fills in helpfully, even as she drops down to a crouch. “And yes, they’re mine.”

As if to prove her words, the moment her knees hit the ground, the shadowy creatures swarm her. Running, writhing, slithering all over her, they climb into her lap, onto her shoulder, over the top of her head. Dozens and dozens of them are chittering at Tiola as they wrap themselves around her.

She laughs and calls each of them by name. Pets them. Talks to them. As she does, they lose their forms until there are no snakes. No birds. No squirrels. Until they are all just amorphous creatures that blend into one another in varying shades of deep, dark purple.

I’ve never seen anything like it, but then I haven’t been in the paranormal world very long, the last year notwithstanding. I glance at Hudson, hoping he knows what’s going on here, but he looks dumbfounded as Tiola treats these shadowy creatures as if they really are her best friends.

In the meantime, the two adults have finally made it across the front clearing to get to us. A tall man with a big, round face and skin the same color as the rich purple pansies my mom used to grow is wearing a pair of blue jeans and a faded green plaid shirt, and a shorter woman with generous curves and skin like a field of lavender is wearing a beautiful red cotton dress with tiny purple polka dots. Her parents, I assume. I don’t know what I was expecting them to wear—but I figured whatever it was, it would be purple. I start to open my mouth, to provide some kind of explanation as to what we’re doing with their daughter, when the man looks down at his daughter indulgently.

“What have you brought for us this time, Ti?” he asks.

“This time?” Surprise has the words tumbling from my mouth.

“Our daughter is a penumbra.” Her mother smiles fondly at Tiola. “A finder—and keeper—of lost things.”

“Like us,” I murmur as their reaction begins to make sense.

“Like you,” her father agrees. “But usually like these shadows.”
