She cuts me off with a look. “I’m talking about what you said about having more flaws than most people. You don’t really mean that, do you?”
“Of course I mean it. Have you met me?”
“I have, actually.” She looks away. “And I don’t think you’re nearly as bad as you want everyone to believe.”
I’m fairly certain that’s the first time anyone has ever said that to me in my whole life. I don’t know what to do with it—I sure as shit don’t know what to say to it. So I don’t say anything, just concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other. And looking out for the dragon that I’m not quite willing to believe has actually disappeared.
Grace catches me looking over my shoulder, probably because she’s doing the same thing, and gives me a rueful smile. “Waiting for that thing to come back is making me nervous.”
I want to ask why she won’t let me fade us the fuck out of here, then, but decide it makes me sound like too much of an arse. So I just nod and say, “Yeah, me too.”
“Have you tried to see if your powers work out here?” She blinks up at me, and I nearly smile remembering the fight we had about my powers not working in the lair. She kept insisting I Jedi mind tricked her into eating two entire packages of Pop-Tarts in one sitting. Trust me, this girl needs no one mind tricking her into eating all the Pop-Tarts she can. She continues. “Because if they do, if he comes back, maybe you could—”
“Not if, when,” I tell her dryly. “That thing isn’t giving up anytime soon. And yeah, I tried in the middle of his attack. I’ve got nothing except my regular bag of vampire tricks.”
“That’s so strange.” She shakes her head. “I thought maybe you didn’t have your powers in the lair because…”
“Because you were keeping me hostage in your head?” I finish.
“I wasn’t going to put it quite like that,” she answers with a roll of her eyes. “But yeah. Maybe.”
“You can feel it, can’t you?” I don’t bother to explain, because either she can or she can’t.
But Grace nods. “It’s not the same here as it was in the lair, is it?”
“It’s not,” I agree. “This is something else.”
“Yeah.” She looks around and shivers a little, despite the fact that it’s at least twenty degrees Celsius out. “I’m not doing this.”
“I know.”
We’re close enough to the mountains now for me to see that I was right. They aren’t black, but rather a deep aubergine purple that somehow makes them look even stranger than I first thought.
