I know it’s been more than a year, and Jaxon and I only knew each other for two weeks.
I know I can’t remember what he sounds like, and if I didn’t have pictures I’m not even sure I would remember what his smile looks like. Or the way his eyes crinkle. Or the way his hair falls over his eyes.
But I do have pictures. And I do remember what it felt like to be held by him. To be loved by him.
Maybe he doesn’t love me anymore—maybe that’s why the mating bond is gone. But I don’t know that. I don’t know anything as long as I’m trapped here. I can’t cheat on him—I won’t cheat on him. And I sure as hell won’t do it with his own brother.
Which means Hudson and I need to have a talk, sooner rather than later. Just…not yet. Not when I’m exhausted and smelly and don’t have any idea what I’m supposed to say to him.
And maybe he feels the same way. That the almost kiss was some kind of aberration based on loneliness and emotional overload and maybe we don’t need to say anything about it at all because he doesn’t have any plans on it happening again, either.
But what if he feels differently than I do?
What if he thinks the almost kiss did mean something?
Something is happening between us. I’m adult enough to admit that. Something keeps tugging at me to seek out his gaze, tease out his smile, reassure myself he’s nearby and safe. But that could just be a by-product of being trapped together in such a small space for so long. Maybe we Stockholm syndromed each other. That’s a thing, right?
The thought has me feeling all weird inside, in a way I don’t exactly recognize. But I don’t want to think about it while we’re alone in what feels a lot like the middle of freaking nowhere—and I sure as hell don’t want to dig into the feeling and try to figure out what it means.
Some things are better left alone.
A sudden thought has me stumbling. Hudson reaches out to steady me, and I blurt, “Umm, you can’t still read my mind, can you?”
Hudson’s gaze swivels to mine, one eyebrow raised. “No. That’s how I know for sure we’re not in your head anymore. Why? What evil thoughts are you dreaming up over there about me?”
I let out a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding. “Selling you to the first person who offers me a shower.”
He chuckles but turns back to gaze into the distance, and I try to will the heat to leave my cheeks.
