Just had my monthly state-of-my-own-worthlessness meeting with Dear Old Dad, and to say it didn’t go well would be quite the understatement. Richard gave me a whole pep talk about how I shouldn’t let my father—or my lack of performance—upset me, then seemed shocked that I wasn’t more upset. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I probably would have been very upset if I hadn’t engineered the whole thing myself…or at least my part in it.
I don’t know what makes my father angrier—that his little experiment isn’t coming along as nicely as he’d hoped or that he had to find that out in front of his entire council, whom he’d invited to my “demonstration.”
After I failed spectacularly—but not too spectacularly, if I do say so myself—he pulled me into his too-opulent office for a “little chat.” I’m not sure why he called it a chat, though, considering my only role in the entire proceeding was to listen to him tell me how worthless I am. I suppose it’s better than actually having to talk to him.
“Twenty percent is not an acceptable performance rate,” he told me in that snooty voice he’s got that makes me want to disintegrate his vocal cords every time I hear it. I wanted to tell him that I disagreed. That twenty percent was the perfect performance rate to sell what I was trying to sell—namely that my powers aren’t nearly as strong as my father wants them to be.
More, that they aren’t nearly as strong as they actually are.
My father’s plan was to demonstrate my mind-control abilities to his council today, not only to encourage them to get behind his latest scheme for war but also to let them know that we will be coming for them next if they don’t.
My whole life—such as it’s been—has been in service of his goal for world domination. There’s only one problem with that scheme, however. I’ve got no interest in it. At all. Which means when I went in there today, I had my own goal—to fail just badly enough for him to think I’m incompetent, but not so much that he thinks I’m a traitor.
If I’d been able to mind control more than fifty percent of his guards, Cyrus would have deemed the demonstration a total success and started moving forward with plans for God only knows what. If I’d failed completely, he would have known I was faking and acted accordingly.
