“And you’ll bring me down to see them—as long as we don’t get too close. Seals need their space so they can feel safe.” She says the last as if it’s something she’s been told a million times before. Which—judging from how headstrong I know her to be—she probably has.

“Absolutely. I love to see the babies, too.”

“I can’t wait!” She claps her hands, then looks up at her father with big brown eyes. “How long will I have to wait?”

He grins and bops her on the nose. “Five or six months, honey. They’ll be here at the end of April or beginning of May.”

“April is after March!” she tells him in a singsong voice. “And March is after February and February is after January.”

Her father is laughing full-out now, shaking his head like she’s the cutest thing he’s ever seen. And maybe she is. Parents are weird about their offspring. Not my parents, obviously, but most parents.

“You’re absolutely right. That is how the months go.”

“But that’s a long way away. It’s going to take forever.” She looks utterly disappointed.

“You’d be surprised how short forever can be when you’re busy,” her dad answers. “The babies will be here before you know it.”

“And you’ll bring me to see them?” She studies his face like a poker player looking for a tell.

He laughs again. “Yes, I promise. I’ll bring you to see the seals in April.” He holds out a hand to her. “Deal?”

She thinks about it for a second, then shakes his hand. “Deal!”

She’s got a wide smile on her face, and for the first time, I notice she’s missing her two front teeth. It’s a good look on her—ridiculously adorable—something she uses to her advantage when she continues. “Can we go down now, Daddy? I know there aren’t any seals, but I want to see the tide pools.”

“Not today, honey. I’ll bring you back this weekend, and we’ll check out all the tide pools. But first we have to go to the store for Mommy. Remember? She needs us to pick up more cream so she can get it all whipped up for the pumpkin pie.”

Grace claps her hands. “I like pumpkin pie!”

“So do I, precious. So do I.” Her dad reaches down to ruffle her hair. “What do you say we race to that store on the corner there? Whoever wins gets the biggest piece of pie.”

Grace rolls her eyes—a move I’m intimately acquainted with. “You always get the biggest piece of pie.”

“Do I?” Her father pretends to be surprised. “Maybe that’s because I always win.”

“Not this time!” Grace takes off running as fast as her little legs will carry her.
